Little is known about the usage of this trademark. It was applied to items with the enamel decoration known to collectors as "Japonica." It has been claimed that the original name on this decoration was Japonica but may have been perceived that the item was made in Japan. Cambridge then decided to change the name to "Hawthorn." It has also been claimed that there may have developing sentiment against the Japanese causing the change but this is not believable since the negative feelings against the Japanese did not fully develop until the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1940. Japonica/Hawthorn was a decorate from the 1930s.

There is a significant similarity between the Hawthorn trademark and the Crown Tuscan trademark.
